Working America Conducting a Door-to-Door Drive

Lower Allen Township has been notified that Working America, AFL-CIO, will be conducting a door-to-door membership drive in the area starting on 2/18/26.

Working America is a not-for-profit 501(c)(5) labor organization that engages in education, and legislative and political advocacy. Working America’s canvassers should be carrying a prominently displayed picture ID card and should be wearing a red safety vest that displays their affiliation with Working America. The canvassers should not be selling any products, nor be attempting to solicit any funds. They typically operate in the late afternoon and evening, from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM, the hours when working people are most likely to be home.

Courts have recognized the right of canvassers to canvass during these hours. Because Working America is engaged in constitutionally protected political speech in its canvassing operation, it is not required to obtain a permit prior to engaging in this activity.

Because this is different than the "normal" soliciting that requires a permit, we wanted to make you aware of their expected presence in our township. As always, we encourage you to exercise caution when interacting with individuals going door-to-door and to verify the identity of any individual before engaging in conversation or providing any personal information. You always have the right to refuse to answer or address anyone who comes to your door.

If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Lower Allen Township Police Department. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and we appreciate your continued cooperation in keeping our community safe and informed.
